There is no verification that this total corresponds to the sum of the item prices, nor any validation of discounts applied. Now, consider a more secure Python implementation of the same functionality. The server will ignore the client’s total and compute the total price itself from the item details and any valid discount code. It also ensures that any discount applied is valid and within allowed bounds. This way, even if an attacker tampers with the client-side data, it will not lead to an inconsistent or exploitive outcome on the server.

It also handles abnormal cases, such as resulting in a non-positive total, by rejecting the order. This ensures the integrity of the pricing logic. Even if an attacker manipulates the request (e.g., changes the discount code to one they aren’t allowed or tries to send their own total), the server’s calculations and checks will prevent abuse. The business invariant – “the customer pays for the actual cost of items minus any legitimate discount” – is preserved by the server, not left up to the client.

For the JavaScript example, consider a Node.js/Express backend handling a similar checkout. The insecure version below takes client data at face value, much like the Python bad example, leading to the same vulnerability.

It then checks the discountCode against a Discount collection to ensure it’s valid and active. The discount percentage is applied but also bounded to a reasonable maximum (50% in this example) to avoid extreme cases. The final amount is then calculated on the server. Notice that the code explicitly checks for negative final amounts and errors out if it happens – reinforcing the invariant that you cannot have a negative charge. This approach prevents a slew of abuses: a client cannot reduce the price by sending a bogus total, cannot apply an invalid or overly generous discount, and cannot cause unexpected behavior like paying a negative amount (which might have refunded money to the attacker in some systems!). The business logic is thereby kept intact on the server side.
7.3 Java
In Java, we consider a server-side component (such as a Spring Boot service or a servlet) handling an order checkout. The insecure version again assumes the client-provided total is correct and uses it directly.
